When a Sore on the Foot Won’t Heal

Many people with diabetes incur injuries to their feet, but because of nerve damage that causes numbness, these wounds may not be detected. Additionally, peripheral artery damage also caused by high blood sugar levels can make it more difficult for such wounds to heal in a timely fashion. This set of circumstances often results in what is known as a diabetic foot ulcer, which may take weeks or even months to heal. In that case, a podiatrist may perform a technique called debridement to scrape away any dead skin or tissue that has formed. First, the area around the wound is disinfected. Then the sore will be examined to determine its depth and severity. After removing any dead tissue, the ulcer will be washed out. Its color is important to note. If the area is red or pink it is more likely to heal. If it is bluish or purple, it is less likely to heal. After debridement is complete, the podiatrist will suggest treatment options to prevent further ulcers from developing. For more information about foot ulcers, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Wound care is an important part in dealing with diabetes. If you have diabetes and a foot wound or would like more information about wound care for diabetics, consult with Dr. Charles Marchese from Manalapan Foot & Ankle. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is Wound Care?

Wound care is the practice of taking proper care of a wound. This can range from the smallest to the largest of wounds. While everyone can benefit from proper wound care, it is much more important for diabetics. Diabetics often suffer from poor blood circulation which causes wounds to heal much slower than they would in a non-diabetic.

What Is the Importance of Wound Care?

While it may not seem apparent with small ulcers on the foot, for diabetics, any size ulcer can become infected. Diabetics often also suffer from neuropathy, or nerve loss. This means they might not even feel when they have an ulcer on their foot. If the wound becomes severely infected, amputation may be necessary. Therefore, it is of the upmost importance to properly care for any and all foot wounds.

How to Care for Wounds

The best way to care for foot wounds is to prevent them. For diabetics, this means daily inspections of the feet for any signs of abnormalities or ulcers. It is also recommended to see a podiatrist several times a year for a foot inspection. If you do have an ulcer, run the wound under water to clear dirt from the wound; then apply antibiotic ointment to the wound and cover with a bandage. Bandages should be changed daily and keeping pressure off the wound is smart. It is advised to see a podiatrist, who can keep an eye on it.

Orthotics and Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is not something to take lightly, as it can dramatically affect your overall health and well being. Interestingly, lower back pain has a notable connection to the feet, since the feet are essentially the foundation of the entire human body. Orthotics, or shoe inserts that are custom or over-the-counter, can be used to address lower back pain. Orthotics are a non-surgical, non-invasive option that might be used by patients to address their lower back pain without undergoing a surgical procedure. The orthotics can be used to put the feet in optimal alignment and motion, thereby supporting the back. If you are someone that is struggling with lower back pain or chronic back pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can provide guidance, advice, and assistance regarding custom orthotics.

If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact Dr. Charles Marchese from Manalapan Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.

The Importance of Daily Foot Care

The feet can be a barometer of our health, and like other parts of our bodies, it is important to care for our feet. The feet need to be strong, limber, and stable to perform daily functions, keep us upright, and prevent us from falling. Foot pain is common, yet many of us do not care for our feet as we should. A daily foot routine can go a long way in preventing foot problems. Things to consider doing as part of such a routine include washing, drying, and moisturizing the feet daily, cutting toenails regularly and straight across to prevent ingrown toenails, and wearing shoes that are comfortable and fit well. Examining the feet for brewing issues, such as cuts, growths, or discoloration, is also important. If you would like more information on caring for your feet, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist today.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Charles Marchese from Manalapan Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Manalapan, NJ, and Staten Island, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Causes of Foot Pain

Foot pain is a common problem that affects people all across the globe. There are many different types of foot pain that develop for various reasons. Pain between the third and fourth toes may indicate Morton’s neuroma. Morton's neuroma is a burning pain that occurs due to a compressed or irritated nerve. Having heel pain may be a sign of plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is the band of tissue that connects the heel to the toes and is found along the bottom of the foot. Itchy feet can be a symptom of athlete’s foot and can come from walking barefoot in public swimming pools, locker rooms, and similar areas. An Achilles tendon injury can cause debilitating pain from increasing speed and distance too quickly while running. If you have foot pain, it is strongly suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can diagnose your condition and offer the correct treatment methods.

  • And more

Diagnosis

To figure out the cause of foot pain, podiatrists utilize several different methods. This can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Prior medical history, family medical history, and any recent physical traumatic events will all be taken into consideration for a proper diagnosis.

What Is Morton’s Toe?

Despite being relatively small parts of the human body, the toes are critical to maintaining the health of the body and feet. The toes may be susceptible to many conditions, including hammertoe, ingrown toenails, and toenail fungus. Many patients may not be familiar with a condition known as Morton’s toe. This condition is present in a patient when their second toe is longer in length than their big toe. Therefore, Morton’s toe is defined by the relative lengths of the second and big toe. Interestingly, women are more predisposed to this condition than men. As a result of having Morton’s toe, an individual may be at an increased risk of developing calluses on the feet. Having the condition may also lead to a somewhat uneven distribution of weight. If you are living with Morton’s toe, it is recommended that you contact a podiatrist today for treatment and advice.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.
