Foot pain may be reduced when specific stretches and exercises are frequently performed. Plantar fasciitis is a common form of foot pain, and is felt on the sole of the foot. The affected foot may feel better when the foot is placed on the opposite knee while sitting in a chair. As the heel is held with one hand and the toes are grasped with the other, a gentle stretch can be felt along the bottom of the foot. This can be followed by kneeling on a pillow, and placing the hands on the floor, while slowly sitting back on the ankles. This is another plantar fascia stretch that can help this foot condition. Additionally, some people enjoy rolling the bottom of their foot on a can or water bottle, which can be effective in strengthening the foot. If you would like to learn about additional foot stretches to help plantar fasciitis, please consult with a podiatrist who can give you expert advice about this condition.

What Can Be Done About Ugly Bunions?

Bunions are all too common and affect all ages of people. They are more apt to happen to women, thought to be because of the pointy-toed, or high-heeled fashionable shoes they wear. However, they are not only caused by shoes, as bunions can happen to people in cultures who do not wear shoes. A bunion is a bony deformity of the big toe joint, also known as hallux valgus. When one has a bunion, their foot appears wider, and shoes can press on the painfully deformed joint. Pressure from the shoes pushes the big toe towards the second toe and the first joint bulges on the side of the foot. As the condition progresses, the second toe may lie over the top of the big toe, which leads to further pressure and distortion of footwear. Hard skin and corns may develop on the bunion and top of the second toe because they rub on shoes. This makes walking difficult, too. Bunions are easy to see. They are red, hot, painful, and swollen. A fluid-filled sac called a bursa sometimes develops over the joint to try and protect it from damage. Due to degenerative changes, arthritis might develop as well. If you suffer from a bunion, make sure to wear shoes that have enough room for the toes to move freely, with the bunion, and see a podiatrist for other suggestions and treatment options.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact Dr. Charles Marchese of Manalapan Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery

Dealing With Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot, medically known as tinea pedis, is a fungal infection that is not limited to athletes. Anyone can contract the infection if exposed to the highly contagious fungi, known as dermatophytes, that cause it. The most common symptom of athlete’s foot is an itching and burning sensation between the toes or on the bottom of the foot, along with a scaly rash. You may also experience painful cracking of the skin, blistering, and thickening on the soles of the foot. While athlete’s foot is not considered to be dangerous, it can result in a secondary infection if bacteria enter the broken skin. The main complication of having athlete’s foot is infecting other parts of the body that have touched your feet. In addition, anyone sharing personal items or showering spaces with you is at increased risk of infection. Athlete’s foot is treatable with anti-fungal creams, lotions, powders, and sprays. If symptoms persist after a few weeks, please consult a podiatrist who can examine the infected area and prescribe medications or creams that are more potent.

Athlete’s foot is often an uncomfortable condition to experience. Thankfully, podiatrists specialize in treating athlete’s foot and offer the best treatment options. If you have any questions about athlete’s foot, consult with Dr. Charles Marchese from Manalapan Foot & Ankle. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality treatment.

What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Tinea pedis, more commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a non-serious and common fungal infection of the foot. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be contracted by touching someone who has it or infected surfaces. The most common places contaminated by it are public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools. Once contracted, it grows on feet that are left inside moist, dark, and warm shoes and socks.

Prevention

The most effective ways to prevent athlete’s foot include:

  • Thoroughly washing and drying feet
  • Avoid going barefoot in locker rooms and public showers
  • Using shower shoes in public showers
  • Wearing socks that allow the feet to breathe
  • Changing socks and shoes frequently if you sweat a lot

Symptoms

Athlete’s foot initially occurs as a rash between the toes. However, if left undiagnosed, it can spread to the sides and bottom of the feet, toenails, and if touched by hand, the hands themselves. Symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Scaly and peeling skin

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is quick and easy. Skin samples will be taken and either viewed under a microscope or sent to a lab for testing. Sometimes, a podiatrist can diagnose it based on simply looking at it. Once confirmed, treatment options include oral and topical antifungal medications.

What Does a Podiatrist Do?

A podiatrist is a medical doctor and expert in foot and ankle injuries and conditions. These include sports injuries, foot deformities, and toenail problems, among many others. A podiatrist can help with conditions, such as diabetic neuropathy, that result from underlying diseases or illnesses. Among the many areas that podiatrists are qualified to treat are musculoskeletal and gait problems that may be the result of congenital abnormalities or injuries. After a gait analysis, a podiatrist may prescribe an orthotic device to counteract the specific problems. For instance, a custom orthotic can correct arch pain caused by flat feet. Podiatrists also treat common foot problems, including ingrown toenails, calluses and corns, and fungal toenail infections. Podiatrists also can offer professional advice on proper footwear and ways to prevent injury among athletes. Please consult a podiatrist if you have problems with your feet.

If you are dealing with pain in your feet and ankles, you may want to seek help from a podiatrist. Feel free to contact Dr. Charles Marchese from Manalapan Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Dealing With Ankle Sprains

Ankle pain is a common occurrence, which shouldn’t be surprising because the ankle is involved in every step you take. Ankle injuries are usually caused by tripping on a step or curb or twisting the ankle during a sports activity. This can result in a ligament sprain. With an ankle sprain, the foot rolls inward and the ankle outward, thereby stretching a ligament beyond its normal range. Symptoms include pain, swelling, redness, and warm when touched. Some stiffness may follow. Ankle sprains often interfere with bearing weight on the affected foot. If you are in extreme pain from an ankle injury and cannot put weight on that foot, please seek medical help immediately. The first thing to do is stay off the affected ankle, keep it elevated, and put ice on it to help reduce the swelling. Seeing a podiatrist as soon as possible is suggested to determine the severity and extent of the injury. Healing from an ankle injury can take weeks or even months. Braces or other walking devices may be prescribed to allow the ankle to move while keeping it stable. Allowing the ankle to fully heal is imperative for avoiding re-injury or chronic ankle problems in the future. For more information, please contact a podiatrist.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Charles Marchese from Manalapan Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Manalapan, NJ, and Staten Island, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
